Claude Duet vs OpenAI Dot: Which Is Better for You?

Two proactive cloud agents with different access rules, local-computer options and approval controls. Here is what matters before you choose.

The Practical Verdict

Choose by Your Routine

Shortlist Duet for continuity with Claude’s connected work at a lower eligible monthly-plan entry point. Shortlist OpenAI Dot if ChatGPT context, Work/Codex delegation or optional local-computer work are important and you qualify for access. Local work and cloud work have different requirements.

What Changes in Everyday Use

The clearest differentiator is execution scope. A dot can connect to one personal computer for local work as well as use its cloud environment. Duet’s current preview does not offer an equivalent general local-computer link. If your task is a cloud document brief, that difference may not matter. If the work lives in a local folder, it can determine your shortlist.

*Muse has a limited free tier; paid prices unverified. Duet: Pro billed monthly, US waitlist. Grok: X Premium, shared usage. Dot: eligible Pro tier; rollout restrictions. OpenClaw: free software, variable model/hosting costs; excluded from these bars. These are subscription entry points, not equal task allowances or a separate agent fee.

A supported communication channel is not permission to read an inbox or operate a computer. Dot’s Teams access is currently invite-only alpha. Buying an eligible plan does not guarantee immediate rollout access.

Approvals, Access and Responsibility

Dot offers four rule choices: act without asking, act when explicitly instructed, ask first, or hand the action to you. Rules do not grant app access or override built-in safeguards. Its Pause control stops the main task; delegated tasks and schedules must be stopped separately. Write a clear stop condition when handing off work.

Which One Should You Choose?

Shortlist Claude Duet If…

You already use Claude, your work is accessible through its supported apps, and a reviewed briefing is the main outcome. You are eligible for the US preview and prefer the $20 monthly Pro entry point to a higher personal subscription.

Shortlist OpenAI Dot If…

Your task benefits from ChatGPT context, delegation to Work/Codex or access to one connected personal computer. You have an eligible plan and region, and you understand which work still needs your device online.

A Fair Task to Try

Simulated evaluation design

Give both agents a fictional client meeting packet and ask for a one-page brief with citations. Evaluate a separate local-folder task only where local access is actually supported. Do not mark a cloud-only tool as inaccurate because it cannot reach an unconnected local folder.

Record the plan, region, connected apps, corrections and approval requests. Keep preparation quality separate from whether an action was actually authorized. The scenario lab includes fictional inputs and a repeatable evaluation checklist.

Common Questions

Is OpenAI Dot the same as ChatGPT agent?

This guide compares the officially documented dots product. A dot can delegate work, but it should not be replaced with a generic ChatGPT-agent feature list. Meet dots ↗

Which has the lower monthly personal-plan entry point?

Claude Pro is $20/month on monthly billing; the eligible Dot Pro range begins at $100/month. Access and usage differ, so those prices do not buy equal task allowances. Claude pricing ↗ · ChatGPT pricing ↗

Can a dot use my computer while it is off?

Cloud work can continue, but work on a connected personal computer requires that computer online with ChatGPT open. Only one personal computer can be connected at a time. Execution requirements ↗

Does pausing a dot stop every task?

No. The documented Pause control stops its main task. Delegated work and schedules have separate stop controls. Stop-work controls ↗

Does OpenDuet have speed or accuracy results?

No. We compare documented access and operating models. The use case is a suggested test packet, not a completed benchmark.
